Cyprus BXL FC march on with 2-0 over Germany

It was another triumphant night for Cyprus BXL FC at the ISB tonight, where they ticked off their fourth win in five games, this time over Germany.

Cyprus BXL FC was once again impenetrable in defense, where they have so far conceded one single goal in 5 games, and that from the penalty spot. This is their best defensive record in the history of the club.

Another notable fact, as if these were needed to prove the huge leaps of progress this team has achieved this season, was that tonight was the first time they have beaten Germany in the history of the competition. And a comfortable win this was too.

La Mannschaft had most of the possession throughout the game, the Cypriots waiting patiently in their well-rehearsed 4-2-3-1 formation in their own half. Once again their opponents were at a loss at how to string passes together going forward, whereas Cyprus was more demanding in attack. One shot on the bar from Anastasiou and one on the post from Georgakoudis may well had been converted, whereas the Germans had only one decent opportunity which was saved convincingly by Gogakis.

Buoyed by the good performance of the first half, Cyprus BXL FC started the second half more convincingly, pressing Germany higher up the pitch and gradually gaining control of the game. They didn’t have to wait long for their first goal, which came when Voudouris (who came on as a substitute for the injured G Leontiou in the first half) cunningly stole the ball from the German defense and run through to score with great confidence.

The referee soon later sent off a German player for a dangerous challenge in midfield, and minutes later the Cypriots got another goal, this time with Anastasiou.

Germany didn’t seem able to react in the last 15 minutes of the game, and looked resigned to the defeat.

It would be impossible to pick a man of the match from the Cyprus side tonight. Voudouris was instrumental in turning the tide of the game from the moment he stepped onto the pitch, but so where once again Georgakoudis, Anastasiou, Papoutsas and Dellopoulos.

All credit must however be given to the collective, that executed brilliantly the defensive strategy of the team, and waited patiently for the right moments to strike.

Coach Nikolian was happy with the performance of the team, but limited himself to "we just got three points. We still have a huge mountain to climb".

Assistant Coach Proponitian on the other hand was much more verbose, and, delirious with happiness at the end of the game stated,  "I am delighted about the result, but mostly because we finally managed to wake up Voudou. It was probably the cold that did it"

The next game for Cyprus BXL FC is against Lithuania on November 24 at the ISB.
